葉っぱが落ちてきて、ようやく鳥が見つけやすくなりました。
秋はフライフィッシングとネイチャー部門のガイドが交差する季節です。
As the leaves begin to fall, birds are finally easier to find.
Autumn is the season when my fly-fishing and nature guiding overlap.
ここ最近、ガイドや野生動物の撮影に関して気づきがあり、自分の写真にも変化がありました。
北海道らしく、特別で簡単に見ることができない野生動物ばかり追い求めてしまいますが（ちょうど上の写真も珍しいキツネですが・・・）、どこにでもいて目立たない種であっても、観察して撮影することで、出来上がった写真や双眼鏡で見る彼らの行動にニヤリとしたり、心が揺らされることがあるのです。
Recently, I’ve had some realizations about guiding and wildlife photography—and I’ve noticed changes in my own photos too.
It’s easy to keep chasing those rare and special animals that represent “Hokkaido,” the ones that aren’t easily seen (like the unusual fox in the photo above).
But even the common, inconspicuous species can surprise you. When you take time to observe and photograph them, there are moments that make you smile or move you deeply.
例えば、いま自分が真剣に取り組んでいるテーマはメダイチドリです。
彼らは渡りの時期に全道で簡単に見ることができるチドリで数十羽の群れで砂浜を歩き、ゴカイ類などを捕食しているのですが、とても警戒心が強く、撮影しようとすると難しくて、面白い。この写真はイメージするものとは程遠く、目指しているのは出来れば鏡のようになった水辺で餌を取るシーン、嘴に砂や水滴が付いていて、かつ赤く染まった朝陽か夕陽が背景に欲しいです。
そのためには天候と時間帯、素晴らしいディテールの為にどうやって彼らに近づくか、などが問題になりますが、観察しているとそれが実際に可能かどうかの判断がつきます。あとはやるだけです。
動きを予測して、砂浜でグレーのシートを被って寝転がり、待てばいつか撮れると信じています。
One of the subjects I’m currently focused on is the Mongolian Plover (Medai Chidori in Japanese).
They can be found almost anywhere in Hokkaido during migration season, walking in small flocks along the shorelines and feeding on worms.
They’re extremely cautious birds, which makes them difficult—and fascinating—to photograph.
This photo is far from what I imagine.
What I’m aiming for is a scene of a plover feeding at the water’s edge, where the surface reflects like a mirror, sand or water droplets cling to its bill, and the background glows red in the morning or evening light.
To capture that image, I need to consider weather, timing, and how to approach them without disturbance.
Careful observation tells me whether such a shot is even possible. The rest is simply to try.
I lie down on the beach under a gray sheet, predicting their movements and waiting patiently, believing that one day the shot will come.
一番上の十字キツネは根気よくストーキングした結果、ねぐらを見つけることができました。
日中、日差しが強い時間帯はそこで眠り、涼しくなると餌を取りに動き出します。数日かけて、ねぐらの側の草むらでこのキツネと同じように昼寝をして長い時間を過ごしました。ある日の日没前にモゾモゾと動き出したので、そっと覗き込み撮影した写真です。キツネと自分以外、誰もおらず、お互いとてもリラックスしていました。
私のカメラは10年前の古いミラーレスなので、薄暗くなると撮影が難しくなります。AFが遅く、ややボケ気味です。鼻先にだけピントが合い、耳先はボヤけてしまっています、絞りも満足していません。だけど、とても気に入っています。
すごく静かで、その瞬間は特別でした。
The cross-marked fox at the top of this page was a result of patient stalking.
After several days, I found its den.
During the daytime, when the sun was strong, it slept there; when it cooled, it began to move and hunt.
I spent long hours nearby, resting in the same grass where the fox slept.
One evening before sunset, it began to stir. I peeked out quietly and took the shot.
There was no one else—just the fox and me, both completely relaxed.
My camera is an old mirrorless model from ten years ago.
In low light, focusing becomes slow, and the image is slightly soft.
Only the tip of the nose is sharp; the ears are out of focus, and the aperture isn’t ideal.
Still, I love this photo.
It was so quiet—such a special moment.
『存在の希少性』と『行動の希少性』が重要です。
メダイチドリのような地味な鳥でも思わず笑ってしまう行動だったり、シーンによって人の心を動かす写真になるはずです。十字キツネのような珍しい哺乳類でも上記の二つがあれば同様でしょう。
これに気がつく人であれば、ガイドを雇う意味がわかるはずです。
そう考えると、今まで見過ごしていたヒントがたくさん落ちていると思いませんか？これが自分の最近の気づきです。
光や背景、撮影の技術などは自分もまだまだ勉強中です。こうすれば地味な被写体でも面白いということを分ってもらうためにも、やっぱり自分の写真も撮らないとなと思いました。
何よりフィールドで過ごす時間の素晴らしさを伝えるためにも。
What truly matters, I’ve realized, is the rarity of presence and the rarity of behavior.
Even a “plain” bird like the sand plover can reveal moments that make people smile or feel something real.
And even a rare mammal, like the cross fox, needs those two elements to become meaningful in a photograph.
Anyone who understands this will know the true value of hiring a guide.
When I think about it, I realize there are so many hints I’ve been overlooking until now. That’s my recent insight.
I’m still learning about light, backgrounds, and shooting techniques—but I want to keep photographing,
to show that even the ordinary can be fascinating.
Above all, to share the quiet wonder of spending time in the field.
間も無く冬ですが、雪景色に変わる前にしか出会えない野生動物や撮影シーンがあります。
10月と11月はまだまだ予約が少ないのでリサーチ多めです・・・なのでオススメです。濃い時間が過ごせると思います。
個人的には小鳥の水浴びと、水鳥が次のテーマなのですが、これも面白いことになりそうです。またそのうちブログに載せます。
Winter is just around the corner, but there are certain animals and scenes you can only encounter before the landscape turns white.
October and November are still relatively quiet months with fewer bookings — which means I can spend more time on research.
That also makes it a great time to visit. You can expect some truly rich, rewarding days in the field.
Personally, my next themes are small birds bathing and waterfowl.
It’s shaping up to be an exciting project — I’ll share more about it on the blog soon….
