ほんの1度、ラッキーフィールドの吉原さんのリサーチの助手程度ですがお手伝いをさせていただいたBBCの北海道での撮影。
それがついに映像化されたとチームエゾモモンガに連絡があり、ようやく見ることができました。写真とは違う映像のパワー。うーん、すごいですね。巣穴の中で丸くなる姿、どうやって撮影したのでしょう・・・。たった3分半の内容ですが、エゾモモンガの魅力が凝縮されていて見れば誰もが魅了されるほど。
かくいう自分も数年前に初めてエゾモモンガを見てから、その可愛さにやられた一人です。秋から冬の間、どれだけ歩き回って巣穴を探したことか。この3分半の作品にこれだけのドラマがあるように、自分で探して見つけ出したモモンガたちとのドラマは本当に刺激的で不思議な体験です。雪にまみれながらスキーを履いて歩き回り、誰も知らない森の木の前でモモンガの登場を待つ最初のあの瞬間、彼らと目が合って「あ〜、ここにいたのか」という気持ち。
Just once, I assisted Mr. Yoshiwara of Lucky Field as a research assistant on a BBC photo shoot in Hokkaido.
Team Ezo Momonga was informed that it had finally been made into a film, and I was finally able to see it. The power of images is different from photos. Hmm, that’s amazing. I wonder how they took this photo of it curled up inside its burrow… Although it is only 3 and a half minutes long, the charm of the Ezo flying squirrel is so condensed that anyone who watches it will be captivated.
I am one of those people who was captivated by the cuteness of the flying squirrel after seeing it for the first time a few years ago. How many times did they walk around looking for nest holes during the fall and winter? There’s so much drama in this three-and-a-half minute piece, and the drama with the flying squirrels that I searched for and found on my own is a truly exciting and mysterious experience. That first moment when you walk around covered in snow on your skis, waiting for the flying squirrels to appear in front of a tree in a forest that no one knows about, and when you meet their eyes, you feel like, “Ah, they were here.”
モモンガは冬だけと、思ってましたがついには夏のモモンガも気になり始め、虫だらけ藪だらけの森を歩くようになりました。大抵、川で釣りをした後ウェーダーを履いたまま、まずは冬に見つけておいた巣穴を順番にチェックしています。雨に濡れた痕跡はとても判別が難しくて、使用中かどうかのはっきりした見当が未だにつきません。しばらくは、ひとつひとつトレイルカメラを仕掛けていくしか無さそうです。
ウェーダーは暑いけどダニ除けで必要だし、汗だらけだし、ヤブ蚊が多くて嫌になりそうで、そのたびに早く冬になれ！と思ってしまいますが、今度は魚を釣るたびにずっと夏で良い！と落ち着かない・・・笑
探しているうちに何か見つけると期待して続けるしか無いですね。
I thought flying squirrels were only seen in the winter, but eventually I started to notice flying squirrels in the summer, and I started walking through forests full of insects and bushes. Usually, after fishing in the river, I put on my waders and check out the burrows I found in the winter. It’s very difficult to see the traces of rain, and I still don’t have a clear idea whether it’s being used or not. For a while, it looks like we’ll have no choice but to set up trail cameras one by one.
I wear waders even though it’s hot but I need them to protect me from ticks, I’m covered in sweat, and there are so many mosquitoes that I feel like I’m going to get sick of it. I thought to myself, but now every time I catch a fish, it feels like summer forever! I can’t calm down…
I have no choice but to keep searching and hoping that I’ll find something while I’m searching.
