シンガポールから釣りに熱心なお父さんと、優しくて素敵なお母さん、そして少し虫が苦手だったシティボーイがやってきました。
フライフィッシングは数年前のNZ以来。キャスティングもままならない、しかもキッズも飽きさせないにはどうするか・・・しばらく悩んだ。
結果としては、かなり健闘したと思う。両親はフライロッドでアメマスとニジマスを釣らせて、キッズには餌釣り。二日目には全員がフライで魚をキャッチした。ボートに乗せたり、あちこちポイントを移動して、慣れない川の冷たさとニジマスの力強い引きを楽しんだ。
やっぱり釣りたいお父さんに餌釣りのパワーを見せつける息子、さらっと釣ってしまうお母さん、3人の絶妙なバランスと綱渡りのガイド。
暑い暑い6月で、のぼせるかと思ったけど最終日の夕暮れが綺麗だった。
A fishing-enthusiast father, a kind and lovely mother, and their son—a bit of a city boy who wasn’t too fond of bugs—came all the way from Singapore.
It had been a few years since their last fly fishing trip in New Zealand. Casting was shaky at best, and I had to figure out how to keep the kid engaged without getting bored. I wrestled with the plan for a while.
In the end, I think we pulled it off pretty well. The parents caught both white-spotted char and rainbow trout on the fly rod, while the kid started off with bait fishing. By the second day, all three had caught fish on the fly. We moved around between spots, took them out on the boat, and they experienced the cold water and the powerful pull of the rainbows firsthand.
The son proudly showed off the effectiveness of bait fishing to his fish-hungry dad, while the mom casually landed fish with ease. It was a delicate balance—three personalities, one guide, and a bit of a tightrope walk.
It was so hot in June I thought we might melt, but the sunset on the final day made it all worth it.
1日目はお父さんと残業、イブニングのロスタイムは20分勝負。
一番頑張ったのは待ちぼうけのお母さんとキッズ。ライズもバイトもあるけど、モノにできず。だってピーカンだもの、仕方ないよとロッドと残念記念撮影。この時点で釣れるかも、というキャストは10回に1回くらい。お父さん一人だけなら、もっと釣れる場所に行けるけど、子ども含めた3人なら安全なポイントが最優先。
On the first day, I stayed out late with the dad for some overtime fishing—just a 20-minute showdown during the evening’s bonus time.
But the real MVPs were the mom and the kid, patiently waiting. There were rises and bites, but no solid hook-ups. It was bright and sunny—what can you do? They took a “better-luck-next-time” photo with the rod and a smile. At that point, maybe one out of ten casts felt like it had a real shot at a fish.
If it had been just the dad, we could have gone to spots with much higher chances. But with the kid involved, safety came first—so we stuck to the more stable, family-friendly water.
2日目には餌を付けるのも自分で出来るようになり、鋭いキャストでガイドを釣りそうになりながらも釣りまくるキッズ。いつの間にか足が濡れても平気になっていて、子どもの適応力の高さに驚き。
グッドなキャスティングが出来るようになってドライフライで数釣りを楽しみ、良いとこ見せたお父さん。それでもまだまだピュアなニジマスとキッズの勝利。
「今日、何匹釣った？」「うーん12・・・？13！」
ボートの上で器用に蕎麦を食べたり。木陰に上陸して休憩。それにしても暑かった・・・。
By the second day, the kid was baiting his own hooks and casting so sharply he nearly hooked the guide a few times—catching fish like crazy. At some point, he stopped caring about wet feet, and I was genuinely impressed by how quickly kids adapt.
The dad showed his skills too, throwing some solid casts and enjoying steady action on dry flies. Still, the pure-hearted rainbows and the kid came out on top again.
“How many did you catch today?”
“Hmm… twelve…? Thirteen!”
They even managed to eat soba noodles deftly on the boat, and we took breaks in the shade along the bank.
Man, it was hot…

As a fellow parent raising a son, I was truly touched by your desire to give your child a memorable experience in a foreign land. It warmed my heart, and although it was a different kind of guiding from usual, I genuinely enjoyed it too. I’ll never forget all those high-fives with his little hands.
And just between us—I want to quietly share something I noticed: you both kept saying, “Let him fish,” or “Let her catch one,” always putting each other first. That kindness didn’t go unnoticed.
