カープは100%サイトフィッシング。
彼らは音と振動にとても敏感で、トラウトよりも警戒心が強いことが多いです。
必要なのは正確なキャストとカープ特有のプレゼンテーション。そして何よりストーキングと洞察力。

他の多くの魚と同様に、釣れる魚と釣れない魚の見極めが重要です。
観察を続けているといくつかの行動パターンがあるのが分かります。
中でも一番重要なのは、テイルアップです。

頭を底砂に突っ込み、尻尾が上がっている魚を探さないといけません。
テイルアップ、テイルアップ・・・湖をあちこち散歩しながら探していると見つかるはずです。
岸寄りでやってくれれば、大チャンスですが、下の写真のように沖合の浅瀬で活発な時もあります。（かなり分かりづらいですが、写真中央の底の色が変わっているところが彼らが巻き上げた泥です）水に入ると一瞬でバレるので、こうなるとお手上げです。近づくのをのんびり待つか、他のを探します。

Carp fishing is 100% sight fishing. They are extremely sensitive to sound and vibration—often far more skittish and alert than trout. What you need is precise casting and presentation tailored specifically for carp. But above all, it comes down to stalking and keen observation.

Just like with many other species, knowing how to distinguish a catchable fish from an uncatchable one is crucial. If you keep watching them, you’ll start to notice several distinct behavior patterns. Among them all, the most important one is “tailing” (tail-up).

You have to look for fish with their heads buried in the bottom sediment and their tails tilted up. Tailing, tailing… as you stroll around the lake searching, you’re bound to find one. If they’re doing it near the bank, it’s a massive opportunity. But sometimes, as you can see in the photo below, they get active in the offshore shallows. (It’s pretty hard to tell, but the discolored patch in the center of the photo is the mud they’ve kicked up). Stepping into the water will spook them in an instant, so when this happens, you’re pretty much helpless. All you can do is wait patiently for them to drift closer, or go look for another one.

観察していると意外なほど気分屋というか、コロコロと行動が変わり、忙しそうです。
クルージングしてたかと思うと、急に岸際で捕食を始め、今度は一直線に移動。しかし気分屋ですが、一つのことに夢中になるので早い速度で一直線に移動している時は釣れません。つまり移動中のコイにキャストしても無駄に場を荒らすだけで、魚はより遠くに離れてしまいます。

ゆったりとした移動やクルージングはテイルアップほどでは無いですが、狙う価値があります。
テイルアップとクルージング、主にこの二つが釣れるときです。水深や流れ、水草や切り株などのストラクチャーからフライを選びます。

Observing them, you’ll realize they are surprisingly moody—constantly switching up their behavior and always looking busy. One moment they’re cruising along, the next they’re suddenly feeding right by the bank, and then off they go in a straight line. Yet, despite being so fickle, they tend to get completely laser-focused on whatever they’re doing. When they’re moving fast in a straight line, they simply won’t take a fly. Casting to a carp on the move is just a waste of time—it only ends up spooking the area and sending the fish even further away.

While a slow glide or cruising fish isn’t quite as ideal as a tailing one, it’s still well worth a shot. Tailing and cruising—these are the two main windows of opportunity when they can actually be caught. From there, you choose your fly based on the water depth, current, and structure like aquatic weeds or submerged stumps.

岸寄りでテイルアップしている魚を見つけたら、どこからプレゼンテーションするか考えて、慎重に近づきます。
理想的な立ち位置は、コイから見て斜め前方。もしくは前気味の横。
彼らは目が良く無いので、向き合う形でキャスティングしても音や振動が伝わらなければ問題ありません。投げる位置はコイを通り越して、3メートル程度離れた位置。

限りなくソフトにキャスティングして、ドラッグ＆ドロップでフライをコイの目の前に置きに行きます。
着水と同時にロッドティップを上げて、奥から手前にフライを移動させます。（リトリーブすると振動が伝わりスプークすることがあります）魚の目の前までドラッグしてきたら、ティップを下げてフライをドロップです。

ストーキングが成功して近距離からのキャスト、かつクリアな水ならバイトが見えるのでセットは容易です。
光の反射、コイが巻き上げた泥煙、距離のある位置からのトライなどでフライが見えない時も多くあります。その時はコイの動作をよーっく見ておいてください。フライに食い付いたあと、わずかに頭を横に振ったり、もしくはフラッシングと言われる、体を横に倒す捕食行動を取ったり、さっきまでスロ〜なペースで食事をしてたのに、不意に向きを変えたり。違和感があるはずです。

どうしても解らない時に良くやるのは、フライラインとリーダーの継ぎ目をマーカーとして見ておく事です。

Once you spot a tailing carp near the bank, think carefully about where to make your presentation and approach with extreme caution. The ideal position is diagonally in front of the fish, or directly off to its side towards the front. Since carp don’t have great vision, casting while facing them head-on isn’t an issue—as long as no sound or vibration reaches them. Aim your cast to land about 3 meters past the fish.

Cast as softly as possible, and use a “drag & drop” technique to place the fly right in front of its nose. As soon as the fly hits the water, raise your rod tip to slide the fly from behind the fish towards you. (Retrieving the line by stripping can cause vibrations that spook the carp.) Once you’ve dragged the fly directly in front of the fish’s face, drop the rod tip to let the fly sink right there.

If your stalk is successful and you’re casting from close range in clear water, seeing the take is easy, making the hookset straightforward. However, there will be many times when you can’t see the fly—whether due to glare on the water, the mud cloud kicked up by the carp, or fishing from a distance. In those moments, watch the carp’s movements very closely. After taking the fly, it might give a subtle shake of its head, perform a “flashing” motion by tilting its body sideways, or suddenly change direction after feeding at a slow pace. You’ll definitely notice a slight anomaly in its behavior.

When I truly can’t tell, a trick I often rely on is using the connection point between the fly line and leader as a sight indicator.

フックセットの後はリールの性能が試されます。
70センチ程度のコイでも、走る時はとてつもなく走って、あっという間にバッキングがでます。恐ろしいほど粘り強く、パワーもあるので6~8番ロッドが良いと思います。私はプレゼンテーションを極力静かにしたいので6番を使っています。

釣れる魚を探して、アプローチからファイトまで、狩猟のようなものです。
かなり、エキサイティングで頭も使います。1匹釣れば、意識が変わるはずです。

こんなに面白いのにやっている人はほとんどいません。
確かに、簡単では無いのですが・・・。

Once you set the hook, your reel’s performance will be put to the ultimate test. Even a carp around 70 cm will take off with astonishing speed, pulling you out to your backing in the blink of an eye. They are terrifyingly resilient and powerful, so a 6 to 8-weight rod is ideal. Personally, I use a 6-weight because I want my presentation to be as silent as possible.

From searching for a catchable fish to the approach and the fight, it’s very much like hunting. It’s incredibly exciting and requires a lot of strategy. Catch just one, and your whole perspective will shift.

It’s such a thrill, yet hardly anyone is doing it. Granted, it’s certainly not easy…
