Duncanさんから最初にメールが来たのは2025年頃、北海道のイトウが釣りたいという相談でした。イギリスに住む彼は、世界40カ国以上でトラウトやサーモンだけでなくドラドやタイガーフィッシュなどあらゆる魚を狙っているフライマンです。メールのやり取りだけでも感じていましたが、実際に彼に会い、くたびれた帽子とシャツ、使い古したフライロッドなど、その飾らないスタイルを一目見た瞬間、真剣さがビシビシと伝わってきました。
なんというか・・・よく見かける「フライフィッシングってこうでしょ？」というチャラチャラした感じが無くて、自然と観察、そして魚を求める貪欲さが見ていて凄いなぁと感心させられました。
Duncan first emailed me around 2025, asking about fly fishing for Ito (Sakhalin Taimen) in Hokkaido. Based in the UK, he is an avid fly fisher who has traveled to over 40 countries, targeting everything from trout and salmon to dorado and tigerfish. I could sense his passion through our emails, but the moment I actually met him, it was undeniable. Seeing his unpretentious style—a worn-out hat, a faded shirt, and a well-used fly rod—I immediately felt his absolute seriousness.
He didn’t have that flashy, stereotypical “fly fishing look.” Instead, I was deeply impressed by his intense observation of nature and his sheer hunger to find the fish.

Our guided trip at Lake Kanayama in Minamifurano, Hokkaido, has now been featured in the prestigious UK fly fishing magazine, Trout & Salmon.
The article weaves in Ainu culture to describe the Ito, and it is filled with profound respect for the native fish and the local ecosystem. It concludes by praising Hokkaido as a world-class wild trout destination that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.
実はDuncanとの三日間のガイドはタフなものでした。
よくあることですが、1日に4〜5本のイトウが釣れた1週間前とは状況がガラッと変わり、静かな湖面。初日は徹底的に叩きのめされて、私の自信もペしゃんこになりかけ、オンボロでチープなボートが余計に見窄らしく見えて、うーんという感じ。
明日、どうする？二日目。イトウがメインターゲット、3日間のうちの1日をイトウ釣り意外に使う・・・？いやいや・・・。
結局朝まで悩みましたが、気持ちを切り替えるためにも一旦、湖は忘れて川でアメマスに癒されることにしました。今考えても、これが良かった。この判断が出来た自分を褒めてやりたいほどです。
二日目のアメマスはDuncanの巻いた#10のハンピーに何度となく喰らい付いてくれました。緑豊かな森とたっぷりのクリアで冷たい清流、ネイティブのイワナのパワーは予想外だったようで、驚きと称賛の嵐は初日の暗雲を見事に吹き飛ばし、おまけにベビーなイトウも釣れてしまい、明日こそ！と笑い合ったのも良い思い出です。
To be honest, those three days of guiding Duncan were incredibly tough.
As is often the case in fishing, the conditions had completely flipped from the week before, when we were landing four to five Ito a day. The lake was dead quiet. On the first day, we were completely defeated. My confidence was nearly crushed, and my cheap, beat-up boat looked even more miserable than usual. It was a tough pill to swallow.
“What do we do tomorrow?” Day two approached. The main target was the Ito. Should we really spend one of our precious three days on something else? I hesitated.
I agonized over it until morning, but to reset our minds, I decided to leave the lake behind for a day and seek comfort in the river targeting Amemasu (white-spotted char). Looking back, this was the perfect call. I almost want to praise myself for making that decision!
On that second day, the Amemasu aggressively attacked the #10 Humpy flies Duncan had tied. The lush green forest, the abundant, cold, crystal-clear water, and the sheer power of the native char completely caught him by surprise. His excitement and praise blew away the dark clouds of the first day. We even caught a baby Ito! We laughed and promised each other, “Tomorrow is the day!” That is a great memory.

三日目からはDuncanが持っているセオリーを忘れてもらうことに集中しました。Duncanはガイドの私より経験豊富なフライマンですが、かなやま湖のイトウに関してはガイドを信じ切ってもらうことにして、ガイドフライを使用してキャスティングやリトリーブも初日より細かく指示しました。
お昼過ぎまで、いくつかのアメマスやウグイを釣り（Duncanはウグイでさえ、楽しんでいました）、80センチを越えるコイを狙い（Duncanは鯉でさえ、真剣に狙いました）、そしてようやく待ちに待ったイトウが釣れました。
その瞬間を彼が記事の中で”Zenith”というワードを使って表現していますが、それはまさに三日間のドラマの頂点でした。
やけに静かなやり取りと緊張のネットインのあと、ハグをしてから震える手でガッチリと握手したことが忘れられません。Duncanは誰に対してでもない喜びと称賛の言葉をぶつぶつと繰り返していました。
On the third day, I focused on making Duncan forget all his established fishing theories. Duncan is a far more experienced fly fisher than I am as a guide, but when it comes to the Ito in Lake Kanayama, I asked him to trust me completely. We used my guide flies, and I gave him much stricter instructions on casting and retrieving than on the first day.
By early afternoon, we had caught several Amemasu and dace (Duncan even enjoyed catching the dace), and we even sight-fished for carp over 80cm (Duncan targeted them with absolute seriousness). And then, finally, the long-awaited Ito struck.
In the article, he uses the word “zenith” to describe that moment—and it truly was the ultimate climax of our three-day drama.
After an eerily quiet fight and a nerve-wracking netting, we hugged and then shook hands firmly, our hands still shaking. I will never forget that moment. Duncan kept muttering words of pure joy and praise, not aimed at anyone in particular, just overwhelmed by the experience.
重要なのは数でもサイズでもありません。
日本から10,000km遠く、イギリスから来たフライマンが北海道の南富良野町にある、かなやま湖という場所で三日間かけて1匹の”このイトウ”に出会った。それが重要なのです！
そしてその橋渡しが出来たことが幸せです。
What matters is not the numbers or the size. A fly fisher traveled 10,000 kilometers from the UK to Japan, spent three days on Lake Kanayama in the small town of Minamifurano, Hokkaido, and finally met that one specific Ito. That is what truly matters!
And I am incredibly happy that I could be the bridge for that encounter.

I am sure he is out there somewhere in the world right now, still challenging himself with new fish. I wonder how the story of the Ito from the small town of Minamifurano will resonate in the birthplace of fly fishing. The potential of Lake Kanayama and the rare Ito is immense. I will continue to guide here, always striving to maintain the delicate balance between utilizing and protecting this precious resource.
