5月のイトウ釣りガイドを終えて、休む間もなく始まった6月。
25日間のガイド＋隙間時間のリサーチでほぼ毎日フィールドに立っていました。上手く行く日も行かない日も、季節は留まらず、目まぐるしいハッチとライズ。
いっぱい釣れてホクホクなゲストを横目に、のんびりと水に足を付けて休憩することも覚えました。
ロッドを持っていると気が付かないこと、わずかなライズに魚の姿、キセキレイの鳴き声、草の匂い。落ちているヒントを頼りに、ガイドの見た自然をお客さんにも感じてもらって、新しい発見になればいい。
After finishing the Ito (Sakhalin taimen) fishing guides in May, June started without any time to rest.
Between 25 days of guiding and doing research in my spare time, I was out in the field almost every single day. Some days went well, and some days were tough, but the season never stopped moving forward, bringing constant hatches and rises.
While watching my guests smile happily after catching plenty of fish, I also learned how to take a relaxing break by dipping my feet in the water.
There are things you cannot notice when you are only focused on holding a rod: a subtle rise, the shadow of a fish, the song of a grey wagtail, and the fresh smell of the grass. By following these small hints in nature, I hope my guests can feel the wild environment exactly as I see it, and make new discoveries of their own.
どうして自分はドライフライにこだわるのか。
毎日、自然を見ていると、ガイドがどれだけ通っても、考えても、到底辿り着かない秘密があると否応なく感じさせられる。それくらい自然は偉大で恐ろしいもの。魚がなぜライズするのか、どうしてフライを咥えるのか。当然ながら本当にわかっている人は一人もいない。当然のことなのに、すぐに忘れて「ああすれば、こうなる」と思い込む。
Why I Prefer Dry Fly Fishing
Spending every day in nature, I strongly feel that there are secrets we can never completely understand, no matter how much time a guide spends on the river or how deeply they think. That is how great and powerful nature truly is.
Why do fish rise? Why do they take a fly? Naturally, no one in the world knows the perfect answers.
Even though this is an obvious truth, we often forget it. We easily start to assume, “If I do this, the fish will do that.”
魚は釣ると痛む。
ドライフライは釣れすぎないところがイイ。
無駄に消費される自然ほど、悲しいことはない。
ガイドである以上、お客さんにそういう釣りをさせてはいけないと思う。釣れても釣れなくても、ゲストが満足できるのが大事。
Catching a fish always puts some stress on it. The good thing about dry fly fishing is that you do not catch too many fish.
There is nothing sadder than seeing nature being consumed and wasted. As a guide, I believe I must not let my guests fish in such a way.
The most important thing is that the guests are satisfied with their time on the river, whether they catch a fish or not.
ライズという舞台に立っている魚だけを相手に、人間側がギリギリまで調整して魚に合わせていく必要がある。時には歩くし、時にはひたすら待つ。ガイドは浮いてる魚をひたすら探す。ロッドを持っていると見つけられない魚がたくさんいる。そしてお客さんにブレーキを掛けて、丁寧にやってもらう。
「せっかく見つけた魚だから・・・ちゃんとやってよ」と祈りながら見守る。
木に登ったり、崖に登ったりしながら指示を送る。息が合わない。釣れない。
お互いため息が出て、どんよりしてくる。けど諦めない。
次のプール。大きい魚が3匹いるのが見えた。待ってみるけどライズは無い、けど2匹はテールアウトまでクルージングして出てきて、餌を探している。
じっくり観察しているとそれが分かる。ちゃんとやると釣れるのか、それとも釣れないのか、見極めが超重要。
We only target fish that are actively rising. It requires us to make careful adjustments to match the fish perfectly. Sometimes we walk a lot, and sometimes we just wait patiently.
As a guide, I constantly search for fish near the surface. There are many fish you cannot spot when you are holding a rod. So, I have to slow my guests down and ask them to approach the fish very carefully. I watch over them, praying in my mind, “We worked hard to find this fish… please make a good cast.”
Sometimes I climb trees or cliffs to get a better view and give directions. But sometimes our timing is off, and we cannot catch the fish. We both sigh, and the mood gets a little heavy. But we never give up.
At the next pool, I spotted three big fish. We waited, but there were no rises. However, two of them cruised down to the tail-out, actively looking for food.
You can notice these details if you observe patiently. Judging whether a fish can be caught with the right approach, or if it is simply impossible to catch, is extremely important.
合図でキャストして、スルスルとラインが伸びていく。
フライはブラックビートル、#12くらい。魚の2メートル先に落ちる。
虹鱒はパチンっとスイッチが入ったように、一直線にフライに向かっていく。ゲストは見えてないけど、私は高台にいるので丸見え・・・！三角形の大きな口先が水面をヌッと割って、ブラックビートルが泡と共に消える。静寂。ビシっとロッドが立って、ラインはどこまでも突き刺さる。
ヤッター！ため息も、イライラも、すべてが帳消しになって、忘れられない思い出になる。
At my signal, the guest makes a cast, and the line extends smoothly.
The fly is a black beetle, about size 12. It lands exactly two meters in front of the fish. As if a switch is flipped, the rainbow trout suddenly darts straight toward the fly.
The guest cannot see it, but I am standing on a high point, so I can see everything perfectly…! A large, triangular mouth slowly breaks the surface, and the black beetle disappears with a bubble. Silence.
Then, the rod snaps up firmly, and the line pulls perfectly tight.
“Yes!” In that single moment, all our sighs and frustrations are wiped away, and it becomes an unforgettable memory.
しょっちゅうすっぽ抜ける、でもきっとそれくらいが丁度良い。
夏が早くなる、水温ももっと上がる。魚は間違いなく、減っていく。
昔はあんなに楽しかった北海道、それでもさらに釣れなくなっていく。自分の子どもが、若い人たちが、楽しめなくなる。
そう遠くない未来に、資源保護のためにドライフライオンリーというレギュレーションができるかもしれない。できないかもしれない。
でもまぁ、とりあえず水中の魚のことは一旦忘れて、ドライフライで楽しみましょう。
探して見つけて、狙って釣る喜び・・・。格別です！
We often miss the hook set, but perhaps that is exactly how it should be.
Summers are coming earlier, and the water temperature is rising. The number of fish is definitely decreasing. Fishing in Hokkaido used to be so much fun in the past, but it is getting harder. I worry that my child and younger people will not be able to enjoy it in the future.
In the near future, a “dry fly only” rule might be introduced to protect the fish. Or maybe not.
But anyway, for now, let’s put aside our worries about the fish deep underwater and simply enjoy dry fly fishing.
The joy of searching, finding, targeting, and catching… It is truly a special feeling!
