It’s Flying Squirrel Season! A Nature Guide’s Daily Routine & Wildlife Photography Tips-
The first dusting of snow has arrived, and autumn’s wild winds have cleared the branches. It’s time for the long-awaited season of the flying squirrels!
Tokachi’s winters are freezing, but within this pristine, snow-covered realm, wild animals bring the landscape to life. Spanning from the rugged peaks of national parks to the windbreak shelterbelts sweeping across Tokachi’s agricultural plains, I’ll guide you smoothly to the best wildlife spots.
Come explore the quiet wonder of Tokachi with us!

Tokachi Obihiro Airport is the most convenient gateway for your visit. Driving on winter roads can be daunting, but don’t worry—I provide seamless round-trip transport between your hotel and the field, so there is no need to rent a car. Leading up to your tour, we’ll stay in close touch via email, so feel free to ask me anything about recommended photography gear or cold-weather gear!
Flying squirrel photography happens only twice a day: at dawn and dusk. For first-time visitors, even when I point out, “Look, right over there!”, most guests tilt their heads in confusion, asking, “Wait… where?” In the freezing twilight, finding them can be quite tricky if your eyes aren’t accustomed to the light and landscape yet.
When that happens, I’ll frame the flying squirrel directly in your camera lens or binoculars for you. Once you get a feel for their subtle movements and tiny scale, you’ll start spotting them on your own in no time!

You will be standing near the nesting site for at least 30 minutes in freezing temperatures, so warm, insulated snow boots are an absolute must to protect your feet. Of course, you’ll need to layer up warmly from head to toe.
Rest assured, we won’t be trekking through deep snow. Even if we do venture off the main path, I step in beforehand to pack down the snow and clear a path for you. You won’t have to carry heavy camera gear for hours on end, either.
For your lunch break between guided sessions, we can head to a delicious local restaurant, or grab “Secoma Onigiri”—a beloved Hokkaido soul food from Seicomart—if you’d rather maximize your time in the field. But while you’re here, skipping the usual tourist spots and relaxing at a hidden gem known only to locals makes for an unforgettable memory beyond just eating famous pork bowls.
Since our tour runs from before sunrise until dusk, we’ll take a 3- to 4-hour break in the middle of the day. Even if you’re riding the high from capturing insanely cute flying squirrel photos… I highly recommend taking a quick nap back at your hotel to recharge!

The wildlife you encounter during the day changes with every season! Last year brought a Mountain Hawk-Eagle; the year before, a Crested Kingfisher; and another time, a Mountain Hare. One way or another, these magical moments transform our route into a true hot spot. Sometimes I discover these locations on my days off while exploring solo; other times, a lucky guest brings us a surprise encounter. It always starts with a tiny clue—and diving deep to make those rare encounters reproducible is where my job as a guide truly begins.
While I strongly recommend a fast lens (f/2.8 to f/4.0) for flying squirrel photography due to the low light, feel free to choose whatever lens you like for daytime shooting. If I feel a specific focal length or setup would be ideal for our daytime target, I’ll be sure to let you know in advance.

Dusk flying squirrels are even more cautious than they are at dawn! The rustle of clothing, the crunch of snow, the quiet clicks of camera controls, or the softest whisper—the squirrels hear it all. We need to stay as quiet as possible…
…or so I ask, but then comes the inevitable rustle-rustle, shuffle-shuffle as hands slip in and out of pockets. Most people have no idea just how much noise they make in their everyday lives. If it gets a bit too loud, for the sake of both the wildlife and our group, I’ll gently remind you, “You’re making a bit of noise there!” But honestly, I’m completely used to it. I always factor that in and adjust our approach accordingly, so you can leave all of that in my hands.

Lately, I’ve been welcoming more and more guests from overseas. Yes, I offer fully English-guided tours! My English might not be perfect, but I speak with confidence anyway, and my guests are wonderfully patient and understanding.
Having visitors from the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and all over the world is a true joy. Hearing their stories about different cultures and the unique wildlife of their home countries is always a highlight for me.
I love going the extra mile to tailor each trip—whether that’s hunting down vegan-friendly restaurants, taking a detour to marvel at the famous Jewelry Ice, or making a romantic stop at Aikoku Station (“Love Country” Station) for a flying squirrel-loving couple. These special requests are part of what makes guiding international travelers so rewarding. If you have any special wishes for your trip, just let me know, and I’ll do my best to make it happen!
Here is the current availability for this winter season:
We still have plenty of openings in December, so feel free to reach out! With lighter snow and temperatures that aren’t quite as extreme as mid-winter, December is a great time for first-time visitors.
For January, available dates are:
• Jan 7–8
• Jan 13–15
• Jan 21–22
For February, only a few dates remain:
• Feb 15–17
• Feb 22–24
We also have plenty of availability in March. One of the highlights of this month is watching long-tailed tits (Shima-enaga) begin building their nests. Plus, as flying squirrel mating season gets underway, you might even get lucky enough to photograph them during the daylight hours! We have guests who return every year specifically for this rare chance.
We look forward to hearing from you!

One final, crucial note: The nesting sites for the flying squirrels and the other wildlife spots we visit are often located within the daily living spaces of local residents, or are accessed with special permission.
As you may know, photographer ethics and manners in wildlife photography have become a pressing topic. To respect the animals, the local community, and our long-term access to these spots, I ask that all location details and field specifics remain strictly confidential.
Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation in protecting these special places!
