The Story of Guiding a Fly Fisherman from NY for 5 Days-NY

A young fly angler in his twenties, visiting all the way from New York.

His request was to catch fish that truly represent Hokkaido, prioritizing a variety of unique scenarios over sheer size. Over those five days, we explored a wide range of waters, constantly bouncing ideas back and forth, and spent our evenings tying flies for the next day’s adventures. It was an unbelievably fun guiding experience.

Young, humble, and eager to learn, his casting improved day by day with every piece of advice. By the final day, he was pulling off clean off-shoulder casts with flawless fly-first presentations.

We talked about everything entirely in English—from fly fishing and family to life in NY and even President Trump. Yet what I’ll never forget are those countless rises we stood side by side in the river watching together. As I looked on from behind while he cast his rod, completely lost in the moment, with a flock of swans flying in formation across the autumn sky, I couldn’t help but reflect on how truly incredible fishing is.

Coming from a world as vastly different as New York, and now heading back home… I poured my heart into every moment, hoping from the bottom of my soul that this trip leaves him with unforgettable memories.

On one of the days, we wanted a bit of a challenge, so we went sight fishing for cruising rainbow trout. We selected one fish out of a few that were rising, carefully observed its cruising path, and discussed the details—where to position ourselves and how much line was needed.

After several missed attempts and a tense, agonizing hour or so, a fly landed in the sweet spot right by the bank and vanished into the mouth of a rainbow trout as it drifted up effortlessly.

It was hidden from my client’s angle, but watching from an elevated vantage point, I had a front-row view of the entire scene—an absolutely heart-pounding moment.

The coffee we drank right after that hit the spot like nothing else.

There were bitterly cold days, as well as days when insects filled the air and rainbow trout went into a rise frenzy—but through it all, he truly got to experience the magic of autumn dry fly fishing.

Although I hadn’t targeted them much in autumn before, we were able to catch small Dolly Varden in a tiny pool using a 3-weight rod. Set against the vibrant fall foliage, the Dolly Varden were as breathtakingly beautiful as ever.

The waters of Tokachi are so rich and offer such incredible variety. Crossing paths with black woodpeckers and Ural owls along the way, I truly hope I was able to convey the full charm and magic of Hokkaido.

He tied a caddis on his very first attempt at fly tying, took it out to the river the very next day, and landed a fish with it. Well done!

After spending five full days together every single day, he really started to feel almost like a younger brother to me. Saying goodbye was a bit bittersweet, but I’m already looking forward to the next time we meet. I wonder how he’s doing back in NY… Thanks for everything, my friend!
