今シーズンのフライフィッシングガイドが始まりました。4月のガイドは雪溶けによる増水と水温の低下、なるべく産卵しているニジマスを避けると入れる場所は限られてきます。それでも二日間、楽しい釣りになりました。
シーズン最初のゲストは南アフリカから来てくれた親子。
久しぶりの川の匂いと新緑に包まれ、これからまた気持ちの良い季節が始まるなぁとしみじみ。長く厳しい冬を越えた喜びを、自然と共有している気分です。
The fly fishing season has finally begun! In April, the water level is high because of the snowmelt, and the water temperature is still low. Also, I try to avoid areas where rainbow trout are spawning to protect them. Because of these conditions, the places where we can fish are limited, but we still had a great time during our two-day trip.
The first guests of the season were a father and son from South Africa. Surrounded by the scent of the river and the fresh greenery, I felt deeply that the beautiful season is starting again. After the long, harsh winter, it feels as if I am sharing the joy of spring with nature.
同じ男の子のキッズを持つ自分には、19歳のジュニアに釣らせてやりたいという父親の気持ちが痛いほど良く分かります。いいポイントはどんどんジュニアに譲ります。・・・が最終日、先行する父親の前に広がるナイスなプール。「このセクション、先にやりたい？」と聞くと「イエス、あいつは十分釣ったからな」とニヤリ。
これは放っておいても釣れるなと思い、じゃ好きにやってと離れた下流にいたジュニアの世話をしていると、しばらくすると聞こえてきた父親の歓声。
二人とも楽しそうで、よかったよかった。
As a father with a young son myself, I truly understood the father’s feelings. He really wanted his 19-year-old son to catch many fish. Because of this, he kept giving all the best spots to his son.
However, on the final day, a beautiful pool appeared in front of the father. I asked him, “Do you want to fish this section first?” He grinned and said, “Yes, because he has already caught enough fish!”
I knew he could catch fish on his own, so I told him to enjoy it and went downstream to help his son. A little later, I heard the father cheering loudly. They both looked very happy, and it was a wonderful start to the season.
11:30~13:00までにメイフライのハッチがわずかにあり、ライズも楽しめました。
ここぞと言うときのライズ狙いは、流石にフィッシング歴30年を超える父親にやってもらいました。惜しくも合わせミスでライズを取ることはできませんでしたが、それもフライフィッシング。良い魚、良いライズが見れただけで満足です。
Between 11:30 and 13:00, there was a small hatch of mayflies, and we enjoyed some rising fish. For the most important moments, I let the father take the lead, as he has over 30 years of experience. Unfortunately, he missed the timing of the hook set and couldn’t land the fish, but that’s just how fly fishing goes. We were satisfied simply to see such beautiful fish and great rises.
ハッチの正体はマエグロヒメフタオカゲロウ。
わずか30分のプライムタイムでした。それ以外の時間は大人しくニンフィングでやりましたが、この時期は深みを狙うより瀬に入ったミドルサイズを数釣りするのが楽しいですね。魚が溜まる場所を見つければ、一つのカレントから5,6匹釣ることができます。
インジケーターを使って、イメージの釣り。ストライクが取れた時の快感が結構ハマります。
The mayflies were “Maeguro-hime-futao-kagerou.” The prime time lasted for only 30 minutes. During the rest of the time, we focused on nymphing. In this season, it is more fun to catch many medium-sized fish in the riffles rather than searching in deep pools. Once you find a good spot, you can catch five or six fish from just one current. I really enjoy “indicator fishing,” where you imagine the fly’s movement underwater. The feeling when you get a strike is very exciting and addictive!
特に海外からのゲストに多いのですが、皆んなラインを出したがります。
キャスティングの楽しさももちろん分かりますが、ガイドの時はなるべくラインを出さないようにお願いしてます。ルースニングではフライラインだけでなく、リーダーまでタイトに保つように、これは必ずです。側で見ているとアタリを逃しているのがハッキリと判ります。やりたいようにやってもらいつつ、修正、修正です。インジケーターの位置と、スプリットショットの数を小まめに変更します。
Many guests, especially those from overseas, really enjoy casting long distances. I understand that casting is fun, but during my tours, I ask them not to pull out too much line. When using an indicator, it is essential to keep both the fly line and the leader tight. From where I stand, I can clearly see when they miss a strike because of slack in the line. I try to let them enjoy their own style, but I constantly make small corrections. I frequently change the position of the indicator and the number of split shots to get the best results.
それにしても、魚釣りってなんでこんなに楽しいんだろう。毎年、言ってる気がしますが、毎年本気で考えます。
世界中で釣りを楽しむ人がもっと増えれば、世知辛い世の中もマシになるだろうか？
少なくともゲストと川に立っているうちは色んなことを忘れることができます。
異国の土地から来て、北海道で釣りをして、誰かに見られている訳でもないのに落ちてるゴミをさっと拾う、ウチはそんな素敵なお客さんばかりで、世界情勢とはかけ離れているようにも感じます。

良い頃合いの行者ニンニクを見つけたので、南アフリカに響くかな？と思い、これは北海道民が好きなワイルドベジだよと教えてあげました。
一つとって渡すと、生のまま齧った父親。
「Yoh! this is strong!』と笑って、良いなぁ平和だな〜。
Anyway, why is fishing so much fun? I ask myself this every year, and I think about it seriously every time. If more people around the world enjoyed fishing, maybe the world would be a better place. At least when I am standing in the river with my guests, I can forget about all my worries.
My guests are truly wonderful. Even though they come from a different country and no one is watching, they quickly pick up any trash they find on the ground. It makes me feel like the difficult news of the world is very far away.
On the way back, while listening to the song of bush warblers, I found some wild leeks (Gyoja Ninniku). I wondered if they would like them, so I told the father, “This is a wild vegetable that people in Hokkaido love.” When I gave him a piece, he bit into it raw.
He laughed and said, “Yoh! This is strong!” I felt so happy and relaxed. It was such a peaceful moment.
